Working for Gametraders

Among other things, we’ve been quite busy of late. There hasn’t been much collecting going on since Diz quit his full time job in October, but he was miserable there so it’s no great loss. Better lifestyle, but less money and all that.

What quitting the most miserable job in the world has done is allow us to investigate new opportunities. To this end, Diz has been working with Gametraders on a regular “Retro Corner” column on the website. Three articles have been written and uploaded so far. They are:

Something New For Something Old

The Atari 2600: From Beginning to End

The Nintendo Entertainment System: From Beginning to End

It looks like the second article isn’t displaying properly. We’ll have to let them know…

Farewell GT Norwood

Next on the list of casualties is Gametraders Norwood. Thanks to rent increases the store owner has been forced to shut down and has no plans to reopen at another location. The final day is Tuesday so you have a few days left to get in there and grab a bargain. Second hand games are 1/2 price, signs are for sale (though we bought all the Nintendo signs and the Dreamcast one), and we walked away with 3 massive boxes of empty boxes and manuals.

This leaves us with but a handful of GT stores in Adelaide. Although we still have the almighty Marion and Salisbury stores with a few smaller stores, Tuesday is going to be a sad day for Adelaide video gamers…

So… you guys still running this site or what??

The short answer is yes. Why has there been no new content for so long? Well, personal lives do interfere with running a site. To cut a long story short, Diz quit his miserable job & got two excellent jobs in it’s place. The problem is that this means less time to work on the site, but one of the jobs is a contract that ends in a few weeks.

Hopefully in the lead up to AVcon, Oz Comic Con & Supanova we can get some interesting stuff uploaded.

So stick around. There’s more to come…

And there we have it for another year. A lot of preparation went into AVcon 2011. For the part we played it went something like this:

Thursday
: Take all the consoles & games to Dave’s as he lives the closest to the Convention Centre. This involves:
- PAL SNES
- US SNES
- Super Famicom
- Super Famicom Jr
- PAL Megadrive 2
- Genesis 2
- JP Megadrive 2
- PAL Megadrive 1
- PC Engine
- Bandai Playdia
+ games for all of those systems. It was a LOT!!

Friday: In the morning take all the power cables to the convention centre for testing & tagging. Final last minute preparation on the presentations. Fox enjoyed the opening ceremony while Diz was involved in testing consoles. Got home at maybe midnight.

Saturday: Up at 6AM to pick up Dave & the consoles. Bringing along all the Super NES & Megadrives. Sitting at the registration desk for Ultimate Gamer signups. Panel at 1, finished it at 2:30. Got it filmed but realised we didn’t have enough tapes to record the next day’s panel. Run around trying to find someone who can rip DAT tapes NOW, found someone & dropped off the cameras. Dropped off all the days consoles at Dave’s & grabbed the SFC Jr with Super Bomberman 4 for the Games Night tournament.

FINALLY got back to the convention centre at 4PM. Back to signing up people for Ultimate Gamer. That was one damn hard quiz Diz put together. Games Night starts at 7PM. It’s quite a small affair. Super Bomberman 4 tournament was a flop, but we had 4 people play which is enough. The problem was that Ultimate Gamer Pairs was running at the same time & they had Bomberman Blast. Diz chose the wrong game, but in our defense we didn’t know what games were going to be in UG Pairs (as Ultimate Gamer games are supposed to be a secret until they’re on stage).

Back to Dave’s by 11:45. Left Fox behind & picked up the cameras for the next day. As mentioned earlier, for UG we had a quiz for entry. The top 32 people who scored highest in the quiz would be able to enter the tournament on the Sunday. Diz had marked all but 5 of the quizzes during the day, so most of that was done, but we had to rank them all. Fox fell asleep while Diz & Dave sorted out rankings. We drove home & got to bed at 2AM.

Sunday: Up at 6AM & off to Dave’s again. Got the consoles for Ultimate Gamer & the “Anime In Retrogames” panel. This included:
- Sega Genesis
- Super Famicom Jr
- US SNES
- PC Engine
- PAL SNES
- Bandai Playdia
+ Games of course.

Ultimate Gamer started at 11 & we proceeded to sign people up until that time. The highest score on the quiz was 11 out of 20. Diz made it a bit too hard, but everyone who entered appreciated the fact that it needed to be difficult. Ultimate Gamer ran until 2:45. Diz did all the hosting & announcing while Dave scored. Fox was around somewhere… We relaxed for about 15 minutes before running to the panel room to begin setting up for “Anime in Retrogames”. This was supposed to be Diz’s one man show & he was looking forward to it. But disaster struck.

We were put into a room that had 2 inputs for the projector: VGA &… VGA. We needed composite input for the consoles. Sadly it wasn’t to be, but another panelist bought in his PC with TV capture card & managed to save the day. Sadly with 4 hours sleep, almost 4 hours on stage & having to run 30 minutes late due to tech issues Diz was off his game. After the panel we rushed to take the consoles back & made it to the after party where much merriment was to be had.

Monday: Oh it doesn’t end there. We pick up all the consoles & take them home. Planning for AVcon 2012 begins.

Thursday: AVcon debrief meeting. We discuss how it all went & who is doing what for next year. Diz decided we should take control of the Retro Museum next year. We’ll see how that pans out. It’s all a work in progress.

So that’s a bit of insight into convention preparation. We certainly didn’t have the lionshare of the tasks, not by any stretch of the imagination. We did do a LOT however. Why do we do it? Would it be corny to say “community spirit”? Maybe… We just enjoy it & we enjoy putting on a show.

We hope everyone who came along enjoyed it. See you next year!!

R.I.P Gametraders Prospect

At the end of June one of our favourite gaming stores closed its doors for the last time. It seems that every time we find a good Gametraders store that stocks cool stuff it shuts down. Fox & Diz are a curse it would seem…

Gametraders Newton, closed due to family issues I believe, but again that was a store where we would always find something new & interesting. Gametraders Glenelg… not sure why that one closed but we bought some cool stuff there including a Sega Genesis Game Genie among other things. Now Prospect has closed down…

A week after it closed Diz drove by & took the following shot:

Very sad… The owner Tony was very open with the reasons for closing down but let’s not get into that right now. Let’s celebrate another brilliant gaming store that was taken from us.

At least there’s still other Gametraders stores around. We may have to travel a bit further to get to them, but it’s normally worth it.

Kyle Hebert Interview

At Armageddon Adelaide earlier this year we met Kyle Hebert, the voice of Teen Gohan in the Funimation dub of Dragonball Z, as well as the voice of Ryu in Street Fighter 4 & Marvel vs Capcom 3. We started talking about old gaming systems (as Fox & Diz tend to do) & he mentioned that he was involved in the remake of the X-Men Arcade Game. Then out of nowhere he suggested that we get together on Skype & do an interview.

Here he is with Diz. What an awesome guy.

Game & Watches Galore!!

We were in Gametraders at Ingle Farm yesterday & stumbled across these Game & Watches. Not sure we’ve seen so many altogether in one place before. They’re not really our thing, but we fully understand why people collect them. If you’re in the area & collect Game & Watches we really recommend checking them out.

But What Is It???

We’ve been buying on Japan Yahoo Auctions recently. One of the things we would like to do is to complete our Dragonball Daizenshuu set. There are 7 main books & we have 5. Additionally we also were on the lookout for a Dragonball movies Dragonbox (which we have managed to successfully purchase). Well while looking through the auctions lists we came across this interesting thing:

What is it?? Well it LOOKS like a console that you draw with. It was interesting enough for Diz to make an impulse buy & 5000yen later it belongs to us. We’ll be able to tell you all about it once we receive it.

Should be interesting…

A few years too late…

To set the scene, who remembers this article Diz wrote about 18 months ago? Well a few years after the Japanese got ahold of the Super Famicom classic controller, Nintendo have decided it’s time to rebadge & offload the surplus stock on Australia.

Excuse the cynicism, but why did Australia have to wait so long for this to come out? Not sure we’ll ever know the answer to that one… Anyway, it is a nice collector’s piece & both of ours are stored in their original Japanese mailing boxes.

If you want to USE the thing however we recommend buying one of these instead. You can use any SNES controller on them & they work just as well. Plus you don’t have to use Nintendo’s points system to buy one.

Collector’s tip #1

We probably could have tweeted this, but oh well…

For those collecting, we thought we would put up a few of our collecting “rules”. First one:

“It’s easier to find a good condition cartridge than it is to find a good condition box. If the cartridge is crap but the box is good, buy it. You can replace the cart later.”

This is the reason why we have games we bought years ago that we still haven’t played…
